Hot Chamber Die Casting

Hot chamber die casting is a metal-forming process widely used in manufacturing. And with its high efficiency and high precision, it has become an important part of modern industry. Unlike cold chamber die casting, the metal melting furnace of hot chamber die casting is directly connected to the die casting machine, so the metal is injected into the mold quickly. This process is mainly used for low-melting point metals such as zinc, aluminum, magnesium, etc.

Working Principle of Hot Chamber Die Casting:

Molten metal injection:

In hot die casting, molten metal is kept in a heated die-casting chamber. The metal is injected directly into the die-casting mold through a gating system. Since the gating system and die-casting chamber are heated, this allows the molten metal to be directly injected into the mold through a shorter path.

Pressure injection:

The molten metal is quickly injected into the mold cavity under high pressure through the injection system to form the desired part shape.

Cooling and solidification:

The metal cools and solidifies in the mold, and after a few seconds to a few minutes, the part is formed.

Demolding and cleaning:

The cooled metal parts will be demolded and subsequently processed, such as removing excess gates, trimming the surface, etc.

Key Equipment for Hot Chamber Die Casting:

Hot Chamber Die Casting Machine

Injection System: At the heart of the hot chamber die casting machine, the injection system is responsible for injecting molten metal into the die cavity under high pressure. The system includes a gooseneck (a part that connects the furnace to the die), the plunger, and the nozzle.

Die Cavity: The cavity in the die is where the molten metal is injected to form the desired shape. It must be precisely machined to achieve high-quality parts.

Clamping Unit: This part of the machine holds the die closed during the injection process, using hydraulic pressure to ensure that the die remains securely closed.

Hydraulic Unit: Provides the necessary hydraulic power for the machine’s clamping and injection mechanisms.

Cooling System: To cool the die and solidify the metal quickly, a cooling system using water or oil is often included in the machine to ensure that the casting process is efficient.

Furnace:

The furnace is used to melt the metal before it's injected into the die. For hot chamber die casting, this is typically an induction furnace or a resistance furnace, depending on the type of metal being used.

The furnace is located directly next to the die-casting machine, and the molten metal is transferred into the gooseneck of the machine.

Die (Mold):

The die is a critical component of the casting process, typically made from hardened steel or other durable materials. The die is precision-machined to create the specific shape of the part to be cast. Dies can be single or multi-cavity, depending on the part design.

Cooling Channels are often embedded in the die to help regulate the temperature and improve the cycle time.

Gooseneck:

The gooseneck is the component that connects the molten metal in the furnace to the die-casting machine. In hot chamber die casting, the gooseneck is submerged in the molten metal, and it allows for the transfer of metal into the injection system.

Applications of Hot Chamber Die Casting

Electronic Product Housing:

Hot chamber die casting is widely used in the electronics industry, especially in the manufacture of aluminum alloy or magnesium alloy housings that require good heat dissipation performance and high appearance precision.

Mobile phone housing: aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy housings have the advantages of lightweight and heat dissipation performance.

Computer housing: such as computer host, notebook housing, etc.

LED lamp housing: Because hot die casting can achieve complex inner cavity structures and fine surface treatment, it is often used to produce LED lamp housings.

Home Appliance Parts:

In the home appliance industry, hot chamber die casting is also used to manufacture some precise and complex small parts, especially those that require high strength and heat resistance.

Power tool housing: such as the housing of electric drills and cutting machines, which are usually made of aluminum alloy or zinc alloy materials, and require the parts to be light and strong.

Electric switches and sockets: The housings of some home appliances and electrical accessories, such as sockets, switch panels, etc.

Home appliance decoration parts: For example, decorative aluminum alloy housings or parts of high-end home appliances (such as refrigerators and washing machines).

Lamps And Lighting Equipment:

Due to its ability to precisely control the forming of aluminum or magnesium alloys, hot chamber die casting is widely used in the production of lighting equipment.

Street lamps: For example, high-strength aluminum alloy street lamp housings.

LED lamps: LED lamp housings made using hot die casting can effectively dissipate heat and increase service life。

Conclusion

As an efficient metal forming process, hot chamber die casting plays an important role in modern manufacturing. It has the advantages of high efficiency and fine production, making it an ideal choice for producing high-precision, high-quality castings, especially for metal alloys with low melting points. It provides efficient production capacity, good casting quality, a higher level of automation, and relatively low post-processing requirements. These advantages make hot die casting widely used in automobiles, electronics, home appliances, and other industries that require high-precision castings.
